How to Reinstall Office on a New or Reformatted Computer (done)

Created by Matthew Keysell, Modified on Thu, 2 Apr at 11:02 AM by Matthew Keysell

If you have replaced your computer, reinstalled Windows, or reformatted your hard drive, you can usually reinstall Microsoft Office using the same licence key you originally purchased.

Your Licence Is Still Valid

GetRenewedTech Microsoft Office licences are perpetual, which means they do not expire. Reinstalling Office on the same computer does not normally require you to purchase a new key.

Step 1: Find Your Original Download Link and Product Key

Your original GetRenewedTech order confirmation email contains your download link and product key.

If you cannot find the email, please check your spam or junk folder first.

If you still cannot locate it, please open a ticket on our helpdesk with your order number and our team can assist further.

Step 2: Download and Install Office Again

Use the original download link from your order confirmation email. The same link can normally be used again for reinstallation.

Do not download Office directly from Microsoft’s website, as this may install Microsoft 365 instead of the correct version for your licence.

Run the installer and follow the on-screen steps to install Office.

If you need help with installation, refer to your Windows or Mac installation guide for the version you purchased.

Step 3: Activate Office Using Your Product Key

Once Office has been installed:

  1. Open any Office application, such as Word
  2. Go to File > Account > Change Product Key
  3. Enter your 25-character product key
  4. Click Activate

If activation completes successfully, Office will be ready to use again.

If Online Activation Fails After Reinstalling

It is quite common for online activation to fail after reinstalling Windows or resetting your computer. This is because Microsoft’s activation servers may temporarily treat the reinstallation as a different device.

If this happens, try telephone activation instead.

  1. In the activation wizard, select Use the automated phone system
  2. Make a note of the Installation ID
  3. Visit the activation page here: https://uk.getrenewedtech.com/activate
  4. Enter your Installation ID to receive a Confirmation ID
  5. Enter the Confirmation ID back into the activation window to complete activation

In many cases, this will reactivate Office successfully without needing further assistance.

If You Need to Remove an Old Office Installation First

If Office will not install properly, shows the wrong version, or keeps failing to activate, it can help to completely remove any previous Office installation before reinstalling.

Download Office Tool here:

https://uk.getrenewedtech.com/Downloads/OfficeTool.zip

Once downloaded:

  1. Open the extracted Office Tool folder
  2. Run Office Tool Plus
  3. If prompted to install .NET, install it and then reopen the tool
  4. Click Toolbox on the left-hand side
  5. Next to Remove Office, click Remove

Once removal is complete, restart the installation using the correct download link from your order email.

Moving Office to a New Computer

A GetRenewedTech Office licence is valid for one device at a time.

If you are moving Office to a completely new computer rather than reinstalling it on the same one, please open a ticket on our helpdesk before continuing.

Include your order number and let us know that you are transferring to a new device. Our team will then advise on the next step.

Keys Do Not Expire

GetRenewedTech licences are perpetual and should continue to work indefinitely.

If your key appears to have expired or stops working after a period of time, that is not expected behaviour. Please open a ticket on our helpdesk with your order number and our team will investigate.

Still Need Help?

If you are still having trouble reinstalling or activating Office, please open a ticket on our helpdesk and include:

  • Your order number
  • The version of Office you are reinstalling
  • The exact error message you are seeing
  • A screenshot if possible

This will help our team get the issue resolved more quickly.
