Running into errors while installing Microsoft Office can be frustrating, but most installation problems are caused by a few common issues and can usually be resolved quickly. This guide covers the most common errors and the steps to fix them.

Error: The Installer File Will Not Open

On Windows

If the installer will not open, first right-click the installer file and choose Run as Administrator.

If Windows SmartScreen appears, click More info and then Run anyway.

If the file still will not open at all, download it again using the link in your order confirmation email, as the original download may have been incomplete or corrupted.

On Mac

If macOS blocks the installer from opening:

  1. Open System Settings or System Preferences
  2. Go to Privacy & Security
  3. Look for the message about the blocked installer
  4. Click Open Anyway

Then try opening the installer again.

Error: Conflict With an Existing Office Version

An existing installation of Microsoft 365, an older version of Office, or even certain Office components such as OneNote can prevent a new version from installing correctly.

To fix this:

On Windows

  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Go to Programs > Uninstall a Program
  3. Remove all Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 entries
  4. Restart your computer
  5. Reinstall Office using the download link from your GetRenewedTech order confirmation email

For a more complete clean-up on Windows, you can also use Office Tool Plus.

Download Office Tool here:

https://uk.getrenewedtech.com/Downloads/OfficeTool.zip

Once opened:

  1. Open Office Tool Plus
  2. Click Toolbox on the left-hand side
  3. Next to Remove Office, click Remove

This can help remove leftover Office components before a fresh installation.

On Mac

  1. Open your Applications folder
  2. Remove any existing Microsoft Office applications
  3. Restart your Mac
  4. Reinstall using the correct installer from your order email

Error: Preview Has Expired

This message usually means a trial or preview version of Office was installed instead of the full version.

This often happens when Office was downloaded directly from Microsoft’s website instead of using the installer provided by GetRenewedTech.

To fix it:

  1. Uninstall the preview or trial version completely
  2. Restart your computer
  3. Download Office again using the link in your order confirmation email
  4. Reinstall Office
  5. Activate it using your product key

Error: Installation Gets Stuck or Freezes

If the installation appears stuck, do not close it straight away. Some stages can appear frozen even though the installer is still working.

Try the following:

  1. Wait at least 15 to 20 minutes
  2. If it is still stuck, cancel the installation and restart your computer
  3. Temporarily disable antivirus software during installation, as it can sometimes interfere
  4. Make sure your system is fully up to date
  5. Run the installer as Administrator on Windows by right-clicking the file and selecting Run as Administrator

Error After Reinstalling Windows

If you have reinstalled Windows and are now having trouble reinstalling Office, this is a common issue and can usually be resolved.

Use the same download link from your original order confirmation email. You do not need a different installer for a reinstall.

Once Office has been installed, try activating it using your original product key.

If the key is rejected after a Windows reinstall, try telephone activation first.

Activation page:

Telephone activation often works when standard online activation fails after a system reset or reinstall.

If telephone activation still does not work, please open a ticket on our helpdesk and include your order number along with the details of the problem.

Still Having Problems?

If you are still unable to install Office after following the steps above, please open a ticket on our helpdesk and include:

  • Your order number
  • The exact error message, or a screenshot if possible
  • Your Windows or macOS version
  • Whether any other Office versions are currently installed or were installed previously

This will help our team identify the problem and get Office installed correctly as quickly as possible.
