Summary
Shortly after opening a drawing, AutoCAD (all supported versions) and Advance Steel freeze or stop responding on machines running Windows 11 version 25H2 (OS Build 26200.8246). The issue is caused by Microsoft Windows Update KB5083769.
Symptoms
- AutoCAD opens normally, but becomes unresponsive a few seconds after a drawing is loaded.
- The application may need to be force-closed via Task Manager.
- Advance Steel exhibits the same behaviour.
- Issue persists across reboots and reinstallations of AutoCAD.

How to check your Windows version
- Press Windows key + R, type
winverand press Enter. - If the dialog shows Version 25H2 (OS Build 26200.8246), your system matches the affected environment.
Cause
Microsoft cumulative update KB5083769, delivered via Windows Update on Windows 11 25H2, introduces a regression that causes AutoCAD to hang shortly after opening a drawing. Autodesk published a workaround on 22 April 2026.
Resolution
Until Microsoft releases a fix, uninstall KB5083769 and prevent it from reinstalling:
- Pause Windows Update. Open Settings > Windows Update and click Pause updates (pause for the maximum period available) so KB5083769 is not automatically reinstalled.
- Uninstall KB5083769. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. Locate KB5083769 and click Uninstall, then follow the prompts.
- Reboot the computer.
- Launch AutoCAD and confirm the freeze no longer occurs.
