Symptoms
When trying to activate Microsoft Office, you may see one of the following messages:
- "We're having trouble activating Office"
- "Something went wrong and we can't do this for you right now"
- "No internet connection", even though your device is connected
- "Product activation failed" after entering a valid key
- The activation window hangs, freezes, or times out
Why This Happens
Online activation requires your computer to connect to Microsoft’s activation servers. In some cases, that connection can be blocked by:
- Corporate firewalls or network security settings
- Antivirus software blocking outgoing connections
- VPN connections routing traffic through restricted networks
- School or university networks with strict filtering
- Router-level content filters or parental controls
Solution: Use Telephone Activation
If your network is blocking online activation, the easiest solution is usually telephone activation. Despite the name, no phone call is required — the process is completed online.
How to Activate Using Telephone Activation
- Go to https://uk.getrenewedtech.com/activate
- Follow the step-by-step instructions on the page
- In the Office activation window, select "I want to activate the software by telephone" or "Activate by phone"
- The wizard will show an Installation ID, made up of several groups of numbers
- Enter the Installation ID on the activation page
- You will then receive a Confirmation ID
- Enter the Confirmation ID back into the Office activation window
- Click Activate to complete the process
Alternative: Try a Different Network
If you would rather use standard online activation, you can also try:
- Switching to a mobile hotspot
- Disconnecting from your VPN temporarily
- Using a home network instead of a work or school network
- Temporarily disabling your firewall, then enabling it again after activation
