Seeing an “already used” or “already activated” message on a product key you have only just purchased can be worrying, but this can usually be resolved.
In some cases, this message does mean the key has already been registered on Microsoft’s activation servers. However, it can also appear when Office has failed to communicate properly with the activation servers during online activation. Because of that, this error does not always mean there is a problem with the key itself.
What Does “Already Used” Mean?
This message usually means the product key has already been recorded against Microsoft’s activation system on another device or account.
For a newly purchased key, that should not normally happen. However, online activation can sometimes return this message incorrectly if there has been a communication issue with the activation servers.
That is why we recommend trying telephone activation first before opening a ticket.
This Is Different From Normal Reinstallation
If you are reinstalling Office on the same computer after a Windows reset or reinstall, you may still see warnings during activation, but the licence can often activate successfully again.
The real issue is when the key will not activate on your computer at all.
What To Do First
Before opening a ticket on our helpdesk, please try the following:
1. Do Not Keep Re-entering the Key Repeatedly
Avoid attempting activation over and over again in quick succession, as this can sometimes trigger additional activation blocks.
2. Try Telephone Activation
If online activation says the key has already been used, try the telephone activation method instead. This uses a different activation route and often works when online activation does not.
- In the Office Activation Wizard, select Use the automated phone system
- Make a note of the Installation ID shown on screen
- Visit the activation page here:
https://uk.getrenewedtech.com/activate - Enter the Installation ID to receive your Confirmation ID
- Enter the Confirmation ID back into the activation window to complete activation
In many cases, this resolves the issue without needing a replacement key.
If It Still Will Not Activate
If telephone activation also fails, please open a ticket on our helpdesk and provide:
- Your order number
- A screenshot of the error message, if possible
- The exact wording of the error
- The version of Office you are trying to activate
What Happens Next
Our team will check your order and investigate the key. If the key is confirmed to be faulty or incorrectly assigned, we will issue a replacement at no extra cost.

If You Ordered More Than One Licence
If you purchased multiple licences and received duplicate keys instead of separate unique keys, please open a ticket on our helpdesk with your order number. This is a fulfilment issue and we will correct it as quickly as possible.
Perpetual Licences Do Not Expire
GetRenewedTech sells perpetual licences. Your key does not have an expiry date and should remain valid indefinitely.
If your key stops working after a reinstall or system reset, please open a ticket on our helpdesk and our team will help you reactivate it or provide further assistance.
