Getting an error when entering your licence key is frustrating, but in most cases it is caused by one of a few common issues that can be resolved quickly. Work through the steps below to get Office activated.
Step 1: Make Sure You Installed Office Using the Correct Download Link
This is the most common cause of an invalid key error.
Do not download Office directly from Microsoft’s website, as this usually installs Microsoft 365, which is a subscription product and does not accept the same type of key.
Instead, use the download link provided in your GetRenewedTech order confirmation email. The installer file should be something like Office_2024_EN_64Bits.exe, or similar depending on your version.
If you have already installed Office from Microsoft’s website, uninstall it completely and then reinstall it using the correct download link from your order email.
Step 2: Check That the Key Has Been Entered Correctly
Make sure you are entering all 25 characters correctly. You can enter the key without spaces, and the activation wizard will usually add the dashes automatically.
Pay close attention to characters that are easy to confuse, such as:
0andO1,IandL5andS
If possible, copy and paste the key directly from your order email rather than typing it manually.
Step 3: Make Sure the Key Matches the Version Installed
Office product keys are version-specific. For example, an Office 2021 key will not activate Office 2024, and an Office 2024 key will not activate Office 2021.
Please make sure the version of Office installed on your computer matches the licence key you received.
Step 4: Try Telephone Activation
If the key is being rejected during online activation, try telephone activation instead. This uses the same key through a different verification method and often works when online activation does not.
- In the activation wizard, select Use the automated phone system
- Make a note of the Installation ID shown on screen
- Visit the activation page here:
https://uk.getrenewedtech.com/activate - Enter your Installation ID to receive a Confirmation ID
- Enter the Confirmation ID back into the activation window to complete activation
