Need Help Activating Microsoft Office for Windows?

If you have already installed Microsoft Office but are having trouble activating it, this guide will walk you through the steps to get it working.

Before You Start

Before trying to activate Office, please check the following:

• Office is fully installed on your computer
• You are signed out of any Microsoft account inside Office
• You have your 25-character product key ready in this format: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

If you are signed into a Microsoft 365 subscription, this can sometimes interfere with activation of a one-time purchase licence, so it is best to sign out first.

How to Activate Office on Windows

1. Open any Office app, such as Word
2. Click File in the top left
3. Click Account
4. Select Change Product Key or Activate Product
5. Enter your 25-character product key
6. Click Activate Office
7. Follow any on-screen prompts until the process is complete

Once activation has finished, go back to the Account page and check that it says Product Activated.

Having Trouble Activating?

If online activation does not work, do not worry. You can usually complete activation using the telephone method, which is fully automated and does not require you to actually call anyone.

Use Telephone Activation

1. Open an Office app and begin the activation process
2. If online activation fails, select I want to activate the software by telephone or Use the automated phone system
3. Office will then display an Installation ID
4. Go to the activation page here: https://uk.getrenewedtech.com/activate
5. Enter the Installation ID to receive a Confirmation ID
6. Enter the Confirmation ID back into the Office activation window
7. Complete the activation steps shown on screen

This is the standard fallback method if Office cannot activate online.

If Office Still Will Not Activate

If Office shows the wrong version, says your key is invalid, or keeps failing to activate, an older Office installation on your computer may be causing the issue. In this case, we recommend fully removing Office before reinstalling it.

How to Reset Office Using Office Tool Plus

Removal steps

1. Download the ZIP file
2. Open your Downloads folder
3. Open the extracted Office Tool folder
4. Open Office Tool Plus
5. If your PC asks to install .NET, install it and then reopen Office Tool Plus
6. When prompted, click Run
7. If an admin prompt appears, click Yes
8. If asked to update the tool, click No
9. On the left-hand side, click Toolbox
10. Next to Remove Office, click Remove

Once Office has been removed, reinstall it using the download link from your order confirmation email, then try activating again.

Common Activation Problems

“This product key has already been used”

This usually means the key needs checking. Please contact support with your order number.

“Product key not valid for this product”

Please make sure the version of Office you installed matches the key you purchased. For example, an Office 2024 key must be used with an Office 2024 installation.

“Preview has expired”

This usually means a trial or preview version of Office was installed. Remove Office fully using Office Tool Plus, reinstall the correct version, then activate again.

Office shows as Microsoft 365

This can happen before activation and is usually normal during setup. Once the correct key is entered and activation is completed, the correct edition should show.
